The Teams enter the Pitch |
Large followings for both the Washington Arms and Coxhoe Wmc. assembled at New Ferons Park for the Durham & District Sunday League Knockout Cup to produce a great atmosphere to which both teams respond with an action packed entertaining game. The Arms create the early pressure and take the lead after eight minutes, a mesmerising run by Michael Reay ends with a powerful shot that Coxhoe keeper Tom Orton can’t hold, Chris Morrison is first to react and hammers the ball home from close range. The Arms continue to push forward but are stunned on the fifteen minute mark with an out of the blue long range effort from Stephen Broom, a stunning strike into the far corner of keeper Ramsay’s net. Ten minutes later a goal of real quality restores the Arms lead, David Fittes weaving his way into the box calmly chips the ball over a defenders shoulder before finishing off with a half volley. Coxhoe once again respond positively and are soon back on level terms, a fierce Simon Ord effort from the edge of the box is parried onto the bar by Michael Ramsey but he is dismayed to see it rebound into the path of Michel Owen who powerfully heads it home. The second half starts with immediate pressure from Coxhoe, man of the match Simon Ord capitalises on some sloppy Arms defending to score the goal of game. Although the Arms work hard in search of an equaliser Coxhoe grow in stature and take command of the game, the dangerous Michael Owen going close twice whilst Stephen Broom is unlucky with a fine effort that whistles over the bar. The Arms keep on battling in search of an equaliser, David Fittes drawing a great one handed save out of keeper Orton and a long range Gary Allen effort finds the side netting however Coxhoe are always in command and put the result beyond doubt on the eighty eighth minute with a fine individual goal from Stephen Broom
