WASHINGTON VICTORIA 2 v 5 LANGLEY PARK STEELERS
A large crowd at Durham’s New Ferens Park were well entertained in the Swinburn Maddison Durham Sunday Leagues first final of the season. The Steelers get off to a great start, a Liam Burn long range effort completely deceives Washington’s keeper Lee Wheatcroft who fails to hold onto the ball, man of the match Adam Malekpour is on it in a flash to open the scoring on the four minute mark. The next thirty five minutes are dominated by the Vic. who pull a goal back after fifteen minutes, Mark Liddle sets up Paul Kindon to hammer home a fine effort from the edge of the box. Two minutes later in the lively Paul Kindon is unlucky to see his fierce shot rebound off the woodwork. Washington’s dominance is rewarded with a fortunate goal on the forty minute mark; Mark Liddle’s corner is sliced into his own goal by Michael Nichol. On the stroke of half time a speculative long range Craig Tompson effort somehow slips through the Vic’s keepers legs to bring the scores level for the half time break. The Steelers come out strongly from the restart forcing a succession of corners one of which is brilliantly finished off with a glancing Adam Malekpour header. As the half progresses Steelers grow in stature but it is another disastrous error by keeper Wheatcroft that lets in Jamie Clifford to extend their lead to 4-2. As the game heads towards the final whistle Liam Burn puts the result beyond doubt with a well executed chip over the keeper to make the final score 5-2.
