Barons Brace Puts Kelloe Into Semi’s
By Groundhopper
In the Durham County Football Association delayed Sunday Cup Quarter Final Kelloe Wmc entertained Staindrop wmc and a Fine 3-1 win made sure they joined fellow Durham Sunday League Sides Brandon Bay Horse and Hetton Lyons Cricket Club in the semi-finals. It was the Staindrop Wmc who started brightly and went ahead from their first set piece corner. This lifted Kelloe into attacking mode but came up against an inspired goalkeeping performance. Kelloe had numerous chances but just couldn't find the net. ! - 0 at half time. The second half started much the same as Kelloe dominated possession and as Staindrop tired, Kelloe created their chances. Gavin Barton finished an Ian Ward cross after 75 minutes to settle their nerves. Kelloe then pressed further and quickly went in front when Ian Ward dribbled through the Staindrop defence and rounded the keeper making it 2 - 1. Barton then scored his second when chipping the keeper with 5 minutes to go making the final score 3 - 1 to Kelloe In the Semi Final they entertain Hetton Lyons Cricket Club at Kelloe on Sunday 20th March Kick Off 10-30 in the Other Semi Final Brandon Bay Horse Travel to Birtley to Play Gateshead Sunday League Side Barley Mow Wmc on the same Date.
In the Leagues Domestic Cups New Durham Wmc Reached the Final Of the Presidents Trophy with a Hard Fought Home win over Durham Bede Lodge 4-2. First Half Goals, 2 From Nicky Marley and 1 From Mark Wild, And a Second Half Goal from Andrew Chester did the Job for New Durham.
In the League Knockout Cup 2nd Round Houghton Comrades were 2-1 winners at Sherburn Village Lambton Arms In the 3rd Round of the Competition , Langley Park Steelers travelled to Quarrington Hill Wmc , A game where the quality of the opposition showed with Steelers playing excellent football and Quarrington Hill being punished for mistakes at both ends of the pitch. Having contained the league 1 side for 20 minutes and creating a few chances themselves, Quarrington Hill conceded a penalty which allowed Langley Park Steelers to take the lead. Another deflected goal then saw Steelers take much more control of the game leading to a half time score of 0-4. Second half Quarrington Hill played better but still could not match Steelers for ability and but for some outstanding saves from Quarrington Hill keeper Doc Clewes the score could have been worse than the 0-6 full time score. Q Hill did play well in parts but the difference in quality was reflected in the score.
In the Quarter Final of the Presidents Trophy Washington Lambton Village were 3-2 winners at Coxhoe Wmc.
In the League Cup Sponsored by Spennymoor town FC Hetton Lyons Cricket Club Travelled to Handenhold to play the Bird Inn, There was only ever going to be one winner in this game as the Lyons totally outclassed the home side. Hetton got off to a good start and after 5 minutes Daniel Moore was fouled in the penalty area and Keith Graydon scored from the spot 0-1. The Lyons had plenty of chances in the first half but some good goal keeping and clearances of the line and Jason Ainsley's rasping 25 yard drive that smashed against the cross bar kept the score down until just before half time good work between Keith Graydon and Michael Canavan and it was Graydon's shot that gave him his second goal and the Lyons to take a two goal lead. The second half was very much like the first with the Lyons well in control and Captain for the day Michael Canavan scored after 59 minutes, a great shot from Nicky Kane and the goalkeeper couldn't keep a hold of it and Canavan was there to put the ball in to the net 0-3. Warren Byrne finally got his goal with a shot from inside the box and the goalkeeper well beaten and the defender couldn't stop it from going over the line 0-4.
I think the home side were very relieved to hear the full time whistle as for most of the game they were totally outclassed and only bad shooting saved them from been defeated heavily.
The Weather again affected Games in the League with Only One game in the Premiership taking Place, Brandon Bay Horse winning 3-0 at Chester Hilda Park.
In the First Division all scheduled games took Place, Washington Arms got off to a great start in the Home Game against Burnside WMC with two goals in the first ten minutes. Danny Murray scored in the first minute and Gary Allen netted the second. Danny Murray increases the Arms lead with his second of the game on the thirty minute mark. Burnside get back into the game with a brace of goals, one either side of the half time break, from their man of the match Craig Ellison. However a defensive blunder lets the Arms in to increase their lead to 4-2 with fifteen minutes. Danny Murray missed a chance of a hat-trick by blasting a penalty kick wide of the goal. With five minutes to go the Arms finally kill off Burnside with a good individual goal from Michael Reay to make the final score 5-2.. David Hall struck the winning goal as Houghton Mill All Stars beat Gilesgate Moor Hotel 2-0 in a close division one encounter. Midway through the first half Mill's Nick Thompson lobbed a long high ball into the opposing penalty area where it struck the arm of a Gilesgate defender and referee Tommy Bulmer had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot. Gary Adey tucked away the resulting kick past keeper Scott Williams to put Mill ahead. On sixty five minutes Gilesgate were reduced in numbers when centre half Terry Patterson was dismissed for foul and abusive language towards the referee. Mill had just made a double substitution and the 'fresh legs' of Paul Rogerson and debutant Max Stoker gave Mill the upper hand against the ten men opposition. On eighty two minutes Stoker made a darting run down the right wing before crossing into the path of an incoming David Hall. Hall neatly rounded keeper Williams to slot home and give Mill a valuable win. Sedgefield Black Lion were 3-2 winners at Sacriston Wmc.
In the Second Division Chilton Wmc were 5-1 Home winners over Washington Lambton Village Inn, Chester Plough lost 3-2 at Waterhouses.
In The Third Division Only Two Games Out Of Five Were Played, Framwellgate Moor WMC Thumped Bishop Middleham Cross Keys 8-0, Michael Jones Was The Star Of The Show With 4 Goals For Fram, The Other Goalscorers Were Steven Carraher (2) And Jonathon Heslop (2). In Truth It Should Have Been By An Even Greater Margin As Fram Created And Spurned Dozens Of Chances. Bowburn Cooperage Lost 3-1 at Chester Easystreet.
In the Fourth Division promotion chasers Chester Cricket Club and Ferryhill Post Boy had to settle for a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw. The Post Boy arguably started the better of the two teams, applying pressure without creating a clear cut chance until their winger was allowed to drive into the box, leaving two defenders behind, to slide home from a tight angle. This shocked Chester CC into action and they gradually pulled themselves back into the game and, with half time approaching, some good work on the right from Ryan Davidson led to a Michael Redshaw shot being parried into the path of John Adamson who finished from close range. The second half was a tight affair with very few chances created by either side, but the final 10 minutes saw Chester CC spurn three excellent chances to snatch victory. Framwellgate Moor Salutation travelled to New Brancepeth Wmc A tough game for the Salutation today after ,They never got going at all today with Brancepeth bossing possession from start to finish and to be fair to them we never looked like getting to the game. They played football throughout with the left winger no 15 I think and their no 11 rang ring round us and caused all kinds of problems. Early in the second half Brancepeth had a man sent off for a bit of handbags off the ball but it didn’t change the game at all, the sally had more of the ball but only managed one or two chances of merit. All in all a 4-1 win for New Brancepeth wmc that was well deserved. Kelloe Davy Lamp were 3-2 winners at Washington Honest Boy,.Ferryhill Dynamo’s crashed to an 8-2 Defeat at Langley Park Rams Head. Durham Garden House travelled to Albany Park to play Washington Colloiery,Colliery got going the quickest and took the game to the opponents strait away but it was proved to be a game was full of missed chances from start to finish. Colliery went behind midway through the 1st half when Durham Garden's midfeilder burst through to beat the offside trap and just touched the ball past the advancing Tom Hallam to trickle into the empty net. Colliery huffed and puffed but nothing was coming off until just after the hour mark when Tom Hallam caught a Durham corner and threw it strait to Drew Gray who played a great ball down the line to Craig Neal who crossed for John Kelly who put the ball into the net.
