Cogdon Makes History

By Ground hopper

In the 6th Round of the League Cup Sponsored by Spennymoor Town Fc, Hetton Lyons Cricket Club entertained Dubmire Wmc from the Leagues Fourth Division. .Gavin Cogdon made it into the Hetton Lyons History books by scoring the fastest goal after just 12 seconds, a ball played through from the midfield chased by Cogden and the Dubmire defender and with the goalkeeper coming to meet it Cogdons pace beat them both to nip in and score. Things got worse for Dumbire when a cross from Keith Graydon and the defender sliced in to his own net and after 16 mins good work between Liam Beeston saw Nicky Kane score his first of the game 3-0. Minutes later Kane was the provider for Beeston and probably the goal of the game with a terrific strike that gave the goalkeeper no chance, 4-0 down and Dubmire must have wondered just how many the Lyons could score and with copious amounts of the ball the Lyons were creating plenty of chances. Keith Graydon scored from the penalty spot after Cogdon was brought down and Gavin Cogdon finished the half with another two goals to complete his hat-trick. The second half and with the Lyons making two subs the goals kept on coming Lewis Dodd’s scored after just been on the field for 3 minutes with a goal he won't forget Nicky Kane scored a hat-trick to make it four goals for him, Warren Byrne grabbed a couple of goals. The game was dominated by the Lyons but credit to Dubmire when they did get the ball they tried to play football and never lost their heads. In the Semi- Final of the Same Competition, Sedgefield Net Park entertained Pelton Roab with Netparks regular keeper unavailable, centre half Shepherd was selected to go in goal. Still there was little he could do with Pelton 4-0 up after 15mins, Netpark folded like a pack of cards. Some more great moves and clinical finishing by Pelton eased them into the Final. Netpark really didn’t threaten the Pelton goal and certainly put in their worst performance of the season. Pelton scorers Keith Lines 3 Craig Mickle 2 Carl Ritchie 2, Anthony Davidson and Kenny Ball.

In the Quarter Finals of the Alan Smith Trophy sponsored By Castle Insurances Ltd, East Rainton FC Cup dream is over after they were mauled by a rampant Brandon Bay horse 9-2. Scorers for the Bay Horse Anthony Blades 4, Paul Eilles 2, Michael Fort 2, Aaron Johnson.

In the Third Round Of the D and P Trophies Knockout Trophy Lumley Fc crashed out of the cup at the hands of visitors Kelloe Davey Lamp on penalty's, despite playing most of the game with 10 men as Gary Jackson saw red on 17 minutes. Before the red card Lumley had taken the lead through James Laidler. But Kelloe controversially equalized before half time. In the second half Kelloe took the lead despite strong offside appeals. Laider then equalized only for Kelloe to re-take the lead. But the 10 men weren't finished & Sean Henderson fired the equalizer with 2 minutes remaining. With extra time looming Lumley almost pinched it when Sean Henderson was denied with a goal line clearance. Both teams looked jaded in extra time & only the post denied Henderson a Lumley winner. Kelloe came out on top of the lottery that is penalties. The Washington Arms entertained Houghton Comrades, the Arms started strongly and after twice going close take the lead with a wonderfully flighted Dave Fittes free kick into the far corner of the net on the fifteen minute mark. The Arms continued to have the best of the play until the half time break after-which the Comrades pressed forward in numbers in search of an equaliser, however the well marshalled Arms defenders are up to anything they could muster and hold out to the final whistle to go through 1-0.

In the Quarter Final of the Bishop Auckland Heart Foundation Cup, Kelloe WMC FC needed extra time to beat West Auckland Eden Arms. Kelloe had the majority of the play but came up against some resilient defending and went through 2- 0 winners in the end. Substitute Gavin Barton firing home first from an Andrew Blackburn cross and then Barton again from 1 yard out after the other substitute Chris Smith back healed into his path.

In the League Premier Division Chester Hilda Park Traveled to Sedgefield St.Edmund’s .On a boggy pitch, Hilda Park started well and got into the faces of the Sedgefield lads not giving them anytime on the ball high up the pitch, Graeme Barber the Hilda Park Forward found himself in a unfamiliar position on the edge of the box and fired past the Sedgefield keeper in style to give Hilda Park a deserved 1-0 lead after 10 minutes. For the remaining 35 minutes, Hilda Park had to work Hard closing down and limited Sedgefield to only a few chances, whilst creating a few themselves, but the half ran out and Hilda Park went in 1-0 up to what was a very good first half display In the Second Half Sedgefield were Looking to level the scores Hilda Park defending well with Scott McGuire in the Hilda Park goal having a Brilliant Game,Sedgefield did find an equalizer with 20 minutes left to play, but neither side could find a winner. In the First Division Sacriston Wmc Travelled to Burnside Wmc A good game for the neutral.A really good Sunday morning game played hard but fairly and in a good spiritSacriston started the better side having lots of possession in the 1st 15 min but unable to find the net. Burnside then got a foot in the game and started to stretch the Sacriston Defence forcing the stand in keeper to pull of some saves. Burnside managed to score from a well taken corner; Sacriston only managed to clear to the edge of the area and then failed to close down the midfielder who struck a powerful right footed shot into the top corner. Only minutes later they made it 2-0. Sacriston did not let their heads drop and pulled one back, Liam Summers headed in for a corner on his debut, the equaliser came not long after, it started deep inside their own half with Ben Sanderson winning the ball, he then went on a 40 yard run, his pace was too much for the opposition, he played it down the right hand side to Wardle and continued to head towards the box. Wardle clipped a lovely ball through for him and Ben curled it around the keeper. Sacriston were then guilty of poor defending and several defensive mistakes allowed the home side to score twice more before half time Half time score 4-2Sacriston started the second half like a different team, playing down the slight slope then dominated the game and had the majority of the possession. They created numerous chances and were rewarded when Peter Lawler slotted in from 6 yards out to make it 4-3. Burnside had their backs to the wall and defended brilliantly, Sacriston were having several shots but not all on target, the equaliser nearly came with good work down the right from Lawler, he crossed it for Shaun Foster but his little back heel crept past the post. Burnside were reduced to trying to catch them on the break and Sacriston paid the price with 15 min left, they had pushed lots of player forward and the Burnside broke down the left wing, Sacriston failed to clear the ball and the Burnside player drove the ball across the goal, Sacristons right back Aaron White tried to clear it but only succeeded in scoring an OG. 5-3Sacriston kept trying and Wheeldon hit the post from a tight angle but the Burnside saw the game out to collect the 3 points.and Langley Park Steelers were 2-1 Home winners Over Gilesgate Moor Hotel.

In the Second Division Coxhoe Wmc hosted Pelton FC today in a game which would see Coxhoe take a step towards promotion to division one. Adam McDonald gave Coxhoe a lead in the 6th minute to calm any early Coxhoe nerves and set them on the way to a comprehensive victory. Although there were no more goals in the first half the Pelton keeper made a great save from Man of the Match Simon Ord to keep the scores 1-0 at half time. Early in the second half Luke Lavery latched onto a loose ball just inside the 18 yard box to bury the ball in the top left corner of Pelton's goal to give Coxhoe a two goal lead. Pelton nearly scored with a quickly taken free kick only for Tom Orton to pull off a fantastic save to maintain Coxhoe's two goal advantage. With Coxhoe looking stronger and stronger as the game progressed Paul Broom finished well after a mazy run to give Coxhoe a 3-0 victory and sealed the 3 points for the home team. A Goal in the 80 Min was not enough for Chester Plough Inn as They Crashed to a 3-1 away Defeat at Sherburn Lambton Arms; Forward Ben Lloyd closed down the Sherburn Lambton Arms defender and won possession and then looked up and chipped the keeper from 30 yards

Pelaw were forced to make changes again at the back with players not being available for the second week running and also in mid field. After 5 minutes Andrew Tippins was brought down in the penalty box but the penalty kick was well saved by Easystreets keeper Mark Middlemass. However after a further ten minutes Pelaw Went ahead from a well worked move between Anthony Nicholson and Andrew Tippins who placed the ball neatly in the back of the net. Both sides were looking for a winner but in the end it remained 3 all with the pitch being the leveller. Referee L. Thompson had a good game and kept it moving.Witton Gilbert Wmc entertained Ferryhill Saints In a thrilling end to end game Ferryhill ran out 3-0 winners but Witton could count them selves unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet. Both keepers had tremendous games in an open encounter which saw first one team then the other attack.Ferryhill opened the scoring when Jack Cleckner, just in his second game of the season following injury, brought down the forward, the resultant penalty was very nearly saved by the outstanding John Smith who got hands to the ball but could not prevent it from going in. There followed an astonishing strike from the Ferryhill left back that screamed into the roof of the net from some 25 yards, although he was allowed far too much time. Just on half time the impressive Sam Renwick found himself through on goal but was forced wide by the outstanding Troy Race who mad several good saves throughout. A defensive error allowed Ferryhill to further extend their lead just after half time but Witton did not let their heads drop and came back very strongly and were denied time and again by good defensive work and saves from Race.

At the other end John Smith made several great saves to keep Witton hopes alive. Alas it was not to be Ferryhill probably deserved the win overall but the margin was maybe a little flattering. Impressive displays from John Smith, Wes Haley Sam Renwick and Scott Embleton for Witton.

This was a great game for the neutral fan as both teams had the lead on more than one occasion, Washington Colliery losing by the odd goal in a nine goal thriller against visitors Ferryhill Post Boy. Postboy took the lead then Colliery replied with an on the line tap in from Chris Grier, then against the run of play Colliery took the lead into halftime after Drew Gray smashed home a penalty after a foul on Andy Mcintyre. After half time Postboy scored two goals to regain the lead, Mathew Davison made it 3-3 after rounding the keeper and slotting home, shortly afterwards Andy Mcintyre smashed home a fine free kick to once again give Colliery the lead but the joys were short lived as Postboy scored two to get it to 5-4 which proved to be the final score.
