League Round up

Thursday 23rd August 2012

It became very clear from the start of this match that East Rainton was going to be well up for the fight and they didn’t disappoint. The game was not safe right up until the 88th minute when we finally scored our 3rd goal to kill the game off.The game was tight early on with both teams trying to get to grips with the pitch and the conditions. Sacriston created the first big chance of the game when Gary Draper’s left wing cross found Andrew Solan unmarked inside the box and he headed wide. Two minutes later East Rainton took the lead when a short corner routine was then followed by a ball into the box which reached the far post where there number 10 received the ball and he feigned to shoot and he then turned Michael Quinn who had committed to the challenge and he finished superbly placing the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.
Sacriston responded well and spent the rest of the first half pinning East Rainton into their own half creating several chances in the process. On 25 minutes Grant Boyd played the pass of the season so far when he played a 50 yard ball straight on to the path of Ward who ran with the ball into the box and his shot looked destined for the far corner but the ball rebounded of the inside of the post and was scrambled behind for a corner.
The pitch was very narrow and this did help us from set pieces and throw ins and our good general play was giving us some good opportunities to exploit this. On 34 minutes we got level when Gary Draper’s long throw resulted in confusion in the 6 yard box and O’Brien slide tackled the goalkeeper and won the ball and Collinson was waiting at the far post unmarked to slide the ball into an empty net. Sacriston then took the lead on 39 minutes when James Thornton’s deep free kick found Gary Draper in the box and he stabbed a right footed shot at the Rainton keeper and he parried the ball out to Collinson who again was in the right place at the right time to plant his header into the empty net.Half time came and went and on 50 minutes Ward who was by far the best player on the pitch on the night with his never say die attitude and constant running in behind the East Rainton defence got a good shooting opportunity inside the box but his shot was well saved again by the East Rainton goalkeeper. Then Andrew Solan got a good shooting opportunity from around 12 yards but put his chance well over the bar.Yates and Nixon replaced Thornton & Solan on the hour mark and that give the side some more pace in the midfield and forward areas. Fenton came on for Collinson for the final 20 minutes.East Rainton did show remarkable spirit and although they didn’t create much there defence kept us at bay as we pressed hard for the killer 3rd goal. Ward was thwarted again on 80 minutes by the East Rainton keeper after a great run into the box from the right hand side resulted in Ward shooting at the far post but the keeper did well getting down low to his right to tip the ball round the post for a corner.Michael Quinn who had a solid game at right wing back suddenly found himself 6 yards out with a free shot on goal after another good move but he blazed his shot over the bar. Then we finally made the game safe with 3 minutes to go when Ward made another powerful run cutting in from the left hand side carrying the ball 25 yards and he laid the ball on to Robert Nixon who kept his shot low from 20 yards out and the goalkeeper let the ball squirm underneath and into the net. This was harsh on him because he had kept them in the game until then. Stuart Fenton added a 4th on 88 minutes to give the game a fairer score line on the balance of play when Gary Draper’s right wing cross was parried by the keeper straight to Fenton at the far post who finished instinctively with a stabbed right footed shot. The game finished shortly afterwards for a final score of 4-1. Houghton Mill Allstars 1 Burnside WMC 4 scrappy first half but burnside took control after the break and could of been 10 1 but for missed chances goalscorers ellison 2 shears 2  An even contest from start to finish.  Brandon took a 2 goal lead through Scott Bryden and Paul Eilles before Houghton pulled a goal back before half time.  Brandon's defence stood strong throughout the 2nd half and killed the game off with 10 minutes remaining, David Fort with a well taken goal from the edge of the box.Sedgefield St Edmunds 3 - 2 Kelloe WMCSt Edmunds went one down after three minutes but goals from John Maddison and Andrew Blackburn put St Edmunds ahead. Kelloe equalised but Stephen Bagshaw hit the winner eight minutes from time and a battling St Edmunds held on to take the points.Hetton Lyons 3 Washington JFC 0
Wash JFC travelled through to Murton for their second league game against League Champions Hetton Lyons! The game saw Hetton have the majority of play in the first half but were limited to only a few chances which were well saved by Dave Smith the JFC keeper who again had another great game between the sticks! HT 0-0The second half again saw Hetton controlling the flow of the game, keeping the ball very well and making WashJFC work hard off the ball! One flashpoint in the game saw Hetton go down to 10 men after their centre half was seen to deliberately elbow a JFC player off the ball. However if anything this just made Hetton up their game and saw JFC relax a little! With approx 20 minutes to go the deadlock was broken after a good move down the right the ball fired across the box for striker Byrne to tap in at the back post!
JFC then tried to gain the equaliser and pushed more men forward only to be court on the break and go 2-0 down after another good finih by Byrne! Byrne would have had a hattrick on the night if it wasn't for Smith in the JFC goal who made a great save from a Byrne penalty. With only minutes left on the watch Hetton grabbed a third and brought the game to an end.FT 3-0 Sherburn Village 2 - 1 Houghton Chilton Lodge FC Houghton Chilton Lodge FC made the trip to Sherburn Village Lambton Arms FC in this Thursday night Division 2 fixture. In the First  Divison only one game was played due to teams taking part in the JD Taxis Trophy, Sacriston Cricket Club travelled to Chilton WmcThis game it has to be said was played on a horrendous pitch with the grass so long that playing good football on it was nearly impossible; The Cricketers started the game well and took the lead on 4 minutes when Gary Draper after winning the free kick himself chipped the ball into the box where Michael Frazer won the header and cushioned it into the path of Yates who found himself in space and finished clinically.Chilton levelled the game on 14 minutes when louis Fitzgerald was given to much time to shoot outside the box and he placed his shot into the bottom right corner. Sacriston reacted strongly and on 16 minutes re took the lead. It started with Andrew Solan playing a lovely pass out to the right hand side where Quinn laid the ball off to Collinson who delivered a cracking cross into the box which found Ward who had made a good run across the box and he placed his glancing header expertly into the bottom left hand cornerThen on 19 minutes Sacriston went 3-1 ahead when after some good team pressing high up the field resulted in Yates pinching the ball from a poor Chilton pass and he ran powerfully through the heart of the Chilton defence and powered a left foot shot into the bottom left hand corner of the goal giving the Chilton keeper no chance.Hall in the Sacriston goal had a couple of saves to make but apart from the odd set piece Chilton didn’t cause to many problems for the Sacriston defence who were all awesome on the day in the shape of O’Brien, Frazer & Bladen. This was the cornerstone of the teams win today along with a good work ethic everywhere on the pitch. The Cricketers winning 3-1
In the second Division the Chilton Lodge entertained Washington Lambton Village FC in their first home league game of the season. Despite recent heavy rain that saw the SAFC match postponed the day before, the Chilton’s pitch at Leyburn Grove was in fantastic condition. After an excellent 1st half performance, the Chilton Lodge went in at HT 4-1 up thanks to 2 goals from Andrew Steele leading the line up front and 2 penalties converted by Gavin Tate which were both won by the impressive Andrew Steele. The away team were lucky not to go into HT with 10 men after the referee used common sense not to send the lad off who conceded the 2 penalties after consulting with home captain Adam Summerson.
2nd half saw Washington Lambton Village come out and give it a good go to get themselves back into the game. Garry McCartney made it 4-2 from the spot after a penalty was conceded by Martin Armstrong. The away side kept pushing and bombarded the Chilton’s goal with long throws, corners and free kicks but the Chilton’s defence lead by mom Adam Summerson held firm. The in-form Perri came off the bench for the Chilton and with about 15 to go scored with a sweet strike across the keeper into the far, bottom corner to make it 5-1. COXHOE WMC FC 3 v 0 KELLOE WMC FC
Coxhoe were to emerge as worthy winners from their first league meeting withlocal rivals Kelloe for a number of years. From the first whistle Coxhoe's work rate and desire to play football saw them take an early lead through the outstanding Daniel Purvis who had broken from cental defence. The game turned quite scrappy for a spell following the opening goal as Kelloe attempted to stifle Coxhoe's attacking football however the irrepressible Adam Strong was on hand to give Coxhoe a two goal cushion going into the second half with a fantastic finish from distance. Kelloe made some changes for the second half but it was Coxhoe who again found themselves with the majority of chances in front of goal. Adam Strong converted a penalty midway through the half to notch his second goal of the game and give Coxhoe a 3-0 lead after the referee had rightly blown for a pull inside the area. Chances to put the game out of sight continued for Coxhoe but were not converted, however it did not prove to be costly. Goalkeeper Jonathan Arnold made a fine save in the final 5 minutes to ensure Coxhoe maintained their clean sheet and collected a well deserved 3 points following a comprehensive footballing display.

Bowburn could have extended their lead, twice denied by the goal frame and twice by the keeper in one on one situations before HT. The Lodge themselves were denied by the upright and a clearance off the line but the Lodge were clearly out of sorts in their general play.
2nd half Bowburn thought they had a 3rd goal claiming the ball had crossed the line however the referee who was unsighted waived play on. The game went end to end but still the Lodge struggled to control the game. on 82, young Iain Mac who had came off the bench found himself one on one with the keeper only for the home keeper to make the save but Iain Mac kept his composure to tuck the rebound away. Brandon Sports 2 v 3 Sacriston Cricket Club.

The Cricket Club  started  the game brilliantly and with great intensity with the midfield and forwards pressing high up the pitch forcing the Brandon Sports  back line into errors. They  opened the scoring on 9 minutes when Andrew Solan’s corner found Michael Frazer unmarked at the back post and he volleyed in right footed. The Cricketers  went 2-0 up on 16 minutes Yates powerful run into the box resulted in his shot being parried out to the far post by the Brandon keeper where Grant Boyd was waiting to slide in a right footed tap in from 4 yards out.

Then on 43 minutes Marc Hall’s long clearance bounced over the head of the Brandon Sports centre half where the brilliant Ward got on to the ball and he lobbed the on rushing keeper with a clever right footed volley which went straight into the net. 3-0 to the Cricketers.

Then on the stroke of half time Brandon got a lifeline when an over hit corner was retrieved at the back post and put back into our box where the Brandon forward clearly brought the ball down with his hand before finishing well into the bottom left corner from 5 yards out.

However 3-1 was a good lead to take into halftime and Collinson replaced the injured Thornton. The Cricketers  started well again in the start of the 2nd half, when on 55 minutes Yates brilliantly worked an opportunity for himself carrying the ball into the box before firing his shot wide. Then 5 minutes later Ward got in behind the Brandon defence and on the stretch tried to cross the ball for Yates who was all alone at the back post but he just couldn’t find his man and put the cross out of play. This match had a very high intensity and by now Brandon had made several changes to formation and personnel in an attempt to get back in the game. Draper replaced the tiring Yates for the final 20 minutes and he contributed greatly in the midfield areas and tracking runners. Couling replaced Welch in the final 10 minutes who had an excellent match in defence and contributed well going forward but shot over twice when in good positions.

Having not taken these chances allowed Brandon half a chance and by this time to be honest Brandon where making all the play and we the Cricketers  were defending doggedly with O’Brien and Frazer superbly commanding at the heart of our defence.

Then on 81 minutes Lee Blades finally got a chance to run at Marc Bladen in our box and after a clever step over Bladen tripped him in the box and a penalty was correctly given.Gav Mudd stepped up and converted the penalty expertly into the bottom left corner. Final score 3-2 to the Cricketers.
