The Cricket Club were quickly out of the blocks and certainly didn't look to be a team three divisions below their opponents. The home side's fluid passing game paid dividends early on when eventual man of the match Andrew Robinson put John Sexton in on goal, with only the goalkeeper to beat Sexton finished stylishly to give Chester CC a 1-0 lead. The home side went on to create and squander a number of good chances in the first half, most notably when John Sexton rounded the keeper only for his effort to be blocked on the line. Washington Arms were unlucky not to equalise when a headed effort from a set-piece was cleared off the line by Michael Reds haw. The Arms did find the net midway through the 1st half however, when playing the ball back to Chester CC from a drop ball the ball sailed over keeper Jack Taylor and into the goal. The 2nd half started in the worst possible manner for Chester CC, a mishit kick from keeper Jack Taylor found Washington Arms' Craig Smith who finished well with a lobbed effort back over the keeper's head. The 2nd half was fairly even but with Washington Arms pushing for an equaliser The Cricketers found themselves under a lot of pressure for most of the half. Paul Curry also put over the bar for Pelaw from close range from a cross. However in the 44 minute of the first half a cross by Pelaw Grange Dogs Fc full back Paul Hargreaves saw Sedgefield's centre half head it into his own net.
