13th Jan 2013

Durham Football Association County Cup 3rd Round.

Hartlepool  Throston 1- 4 Hetton Lyons CC

Two goals in each half from the Lyons put them in to the next round. On a very uneven pitch it wasnt a game for slick passing  but the Lyons created plenty of chances in the first half and the home side were always on the back foot. Danny Craggs opened the scoring in the 16th minute giving the goalkeeper no chance with his strike. Chris Wallace always in the thick of the tackles in midfield scored the Lyons second goal in the 42nd minute, some excellent work from Teasdale and Wallace finished it off.

Second half and Throston had to push on for a goal but the Lyons increased their lead in the 58th minute, Matty Weirs shrugged off a defender and from his cross Lewis Teasdale found the back of the net. The home side pulled a goal back in the 76th minute from the right hand side and kept pushing for another but with three minutes to go a header from Ellison to Matty Weirs and he lobbed the advancing goalkeeper to make 4-1

Stepys Coaches Presidents Trophy Semi-final

Pelaw Grange Dogs FC 5  v 3 Houghton Chilton Lodge FC
Pelaw started brightly but didn’t test the Houghton keeper and it was the away side that took the lead when a cheap free kick was concerned down the left and the ball was wiped in by Fox and headed past Adnitt by Colledge. The Dogs pushed forward to get level and built up the pressure but the Houghton defence stood strong clearing the danger and then needed the help of the post after the keeper come to punch a cross and Mclean tried to slide it passed him only for it to trickle on to the post. It was a long ball over the top that Pelaw didn’t deal with and a cross from the right that seen Agnew finish one on one with past Adnitt to double Houghton’s lead. With 5 minutes of the first half remaining the Dogs pulled one back when a ball up to Hawkins was controlled well he then laid off Mclean who hit a shot into the top corner from distance. However Houghton got back into the game when again from the left a cross played into the 6 yard box wasn’t dealt with and Macpherson looped a little ball over Adnitt who had no chance. Pelaw now three one down at half time.
The second half seen an improved Pelaw performance but final ball was letting the Dogs down. The turning point was on the 70 minute mark when Agnew robbed the ball in his own half from the Dogs he then skipped past three players and crossed and a penalty was awarded by the linesman for hand ball against Hargreaves, Tate stepped up to take the spot kick and hit it hard to the left for Adnitt to make a great save. With 7 minutes remaining the Dogs pushed forward and Worley was played in and beat the offside trap and rounded the Defty in the Houghton goal and slotted home. Into the final minutes the dogs get a corner which Henderson swings in and Mclean flicks on only for it to be saved by the defender and out for another corner. The resulting corner by Donnelly was cleared back out to him and he then hit another ball into the 6 yard box for Worley to head home. 3v3 at full time.Extra time was all one way with Houghton looking very tired and a younger fresher Dogs pilling on the pressure, the Dogs took the lead for the first time in the match when another Donnelly corner was cleared back out to him, he then crossed again this time the ball bounced in front of the keeper and went into the top corner. Houghton nearly drew level when a counter attack left the Dogs exposed at the back and a latch ditch tackle from Patterson was enough for the Houghton forward to hit the post and the ball roll back into Adnitt hands. The match was over in the second half of extra time when Johnson tackled well on the edge of the Dogs box he then played a brilliant first time ball to Mclean who took on two Houghton defenders before slotting the ball into the top corner. Despite attempts by Pelaw Grange to play this game on 3G both sides lined up on a perfectly playable pitch at Southern Area in Rickleton looking to make it through to the final of the Presidents Cup. This was the 2nd year running The Lodge were in the semi finals of this cup. Houghton Chilton Lodge done their chances no harm when they took the lead in this around the 20 minute mark, a great freekick in from John Fox was met by Graham Colledge who powered his header into the net from 6 yards. The Lodge then doubled their lead around the half hour, mom John Fox again provider with a through ball for young Perri Agnew who calmly slotted past the keeper. The home team then pulled themselves back into the game approaching halftime with a great strike from 20 yards into the top corner. Just on halftime John Fox provided his 3rd assist of the half crossing for Iain Macpherson to tap home. 1-3 HT.
2nd half was just as entertaining as the first with both sides looking for goals. With about 20 to go The Lodges Perri Agnew went on a mazy run from the halfway line into Pelaws box beating at least 3 men, his shot was judged to have been handled in the area by a Pelaw player and referee Colin Piggott aided by his linesman pointed to the spot. Ever reliable pelanty taker Gav Tait stepped up to secure the win for The Lodge however Pelaws keeper pulled off a worldy of a save to keep the ball out of the net. This galvanised Pelaw who pushed their left back up top and it was he who brought Pelaw closer with 10 to go, running from deep the Lodges defence were nowhere to be seen, he rounded the keeper to slot home from a tight angle. Then with literally minutes to go a corner was met unchallenged by the same Pelaw player who found the net with a bullet header from 6 yards. 3-3 FT.
Extra time was then needed to settle this fantastic cup tie. The Lodge carrying injuries clearly looked tired and shocked to be playing the extra half hour and to their credit Pelaw pushed on and took full advantage. In the 1st period a routine in swinging ball to the back post was left by defender and goalkeeper, bounced once and into the top corner to make it 4-3 to Pelaw. 2nd period saw the win sealed by a Pelaw forward who carried the ball across the box past the tired Lodge defence to smash home to make it 5-3.
This cracking cup tie was a great advertisement for Sunday morning football, both teams competed well, played the game in good spirit & displayed a mutual respect to each other at the final whistle, whilst the referee and his 2 linesman all had good games. Best of luck Pelaw in the final.

Stepys Coaches Presidents Trophy Quarter Final
Durham County Seniors FC  2 v 2 Dubmire FC  aet  Durham won on penalties
Durham County Seniors mangaged to make their first semi final of the year beating a tough opposition from two leagues above them. Durham took the lead twice through Mark Hughes( through a goalkeeping mistake) and Lee Walker (after Adam Birks picked out a pass from the left side of midfield) only for the 2nd division side to repeat with comeback goals. Durhams fortunes went from bad to good in a matter of seconds as Brian Gillespie was sent off in the 89th, as he accidentally handled on the line which he could not have done anything about. The Dubmire Striker stood up to take the penalty nervously and blasted over the bar.

Extra time saw a solid defensive display by all of the Durham County players with Scott Arnott hitting the post with a fine free kick, with no goals it was time for the dreaded penalty shootout.

Lee Walker, Scott Arnott, Johnathon Curry, Daniel Cummings, Mark Hughes and Adam Whale stood up for County with only Curry unable to convert. The Dubmire however had to step up to the heroics of David Flowers saving two of their penalties sending County into the semi finals.

With super sub Aaron Wilkinson only being on the pitch 25 minutes and scoring a hat trick. The goal of the game was scored last of all by another sub Scott Embleton who half volleyed the ball into the top corner from 20 yards.

Sedgefield NETPark  1 v 5  Washington Cross Keys
An even first half saw the teams level at the break, H/T 1-1.
Second half it was all about taking your chances, NETPark missed a few one on ones and were punished by a more clinical Cross Key's team, scoreline a bit harsh on NETPark but scoring goals (or not in NETPark's case) is why they are near the foot of the table, F/T 1-5.

Ushaw Moor Cricket Club 0  v 3  Shadforth Plough Inn
The Plough travelled to Ushaw Moor CC looking to put a woeful run of form behind them, after losing 3 on the bounce and seeing title hopes fade this was a must win game, The Plough started the brighter of the 2 sides, when Richard Johnson slipped a ball into Moore he helped it around the corner to Elliott who was brought down in the box, Moore converted with confidence.
The first half was limited to hardly any chances a couple of efforts from distance and a free kick on target where all the homeside could counger up, 5 miuntes from the break Ushaw Moor were robbed of possesion on the edge of the visitors penalty area by Maddox, he played a ball to Richard Jonhson, it was 4 on 3 in the Ploughs favour, Moore took a defender one way Elliott took one the other which left Johnsn with loads of time to pick his pass, he looked up saw the keeper of his line and from 30 yards found the back of net to double the visitors advantage.
In the second half it was pretty much the same until that trio linked up again, Johnson played a cutting pass into the channel for Elliott his cross was perfect for Moore to nod home to wrap it up.
The home side were restricted to long range efforts, corners and long throws, but every single player from the Plough put their bodies in the way when needed.

Ferryhill created many oppotunities but could not finish any of them off due to some exceptional goal keeping and brave defending before West Rainton punished the Dynamoes when goal keeper Ben Hunter made a rare mistake to gift Rainton a goal before the break. High Shincliffe Avenue 1 v 3  Pittington
A closely fought match by two fairly evenly matched teams. The Avenue had the better of the opening period pressing Pittington for much of the first 20 minutes. Pittington had a break from a Shincliffe corner and managed to take the lead through a cool finish on the break against the run of play. Pittington then doubled their lead capitalising on an error at the back by Shincliffe. On around 35 minutes Avenue defender Adam Laing slotted a neat ball through to Paul Roughley who ran from the halfway line towards goal, beating a couple of men on the way. Just inside the box, he drove low and with the aid of a bounce and the outstretched 'keeper's glove, the ball made it into the net to bring the Avenue back into the game. Avenue piled on more pressure with a number of corners and some counters but failed to capitlise on the pressure. The second half started with Pittington coming out of the blocks quicker and Avenue 'keeper Craig Browne kept them in the game with some fine keeping that earned him MOM inclduing a fine double save on around the hour mark. Shincliffe did manage a few more counters and stretched Pittington at times but weren't able to carve any clear cut chances apart from a few drives from out the area. Pittington managed to take a 3rd goal on around 80mins to seal the game after another sloppy bit of defending by the Avenue. All in all a good game of football. in a very scrappy match due to the muddy pitch which was more like a swamp, pittington managed to get the better of a good shincliffe sideWashinton Ox and Plough  2  V 3  Washington New Tavern
Ox and Plough started off the stronger team with the Tavern displaying a very poor performance throughout the 1st half. The Ox and Plough deserving their 1-0 lead at half thanks to an unstoppable strike from the man of the match performing midfielder.
