HCLFC tried to push on but some bad touches and sloppy play around their oppponents box meant they failed to extend their lead. Houghton Mill All Sars 1 v 2 Pennywell Comrades

Houghton Mill All Stars exited the County Cup 2-1 to Pennywell Comrades from the Sunderand league. There were no goals in an uneventful first half - Pennywell broke the deadlock after sixty five minutes only for Mill's Chris Lowrey to equalise shortly afterwards. With five minutes remaining Mill's Philip Thompson could not get out of the way of a Pennywell shot at goal and unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for the winning goal.

Hetton New Inn 0 v  6 Pelaw Grange Dogs

With the Dogs down to the bare bones due to injuries and only 11 fit players we kicked off down the slope. In the opening exchanges Turnes missed a glorious chance when presented with a one on one but shot straight at the advancing keeper and Bain kept it level with a few good saves.
The Dogs then took the lead with good link up play between Henderson and Worley with the latter being brought down for a penalty which he got up to convert. It was 2-0 when a free kick by Gosling was met with a thumping header by Turnes. Hargreaves who was carrying an injury himself replaced Donnelly who was carried off with a bad ankle injury. H-T 0-2

The second half began with Hetton New Inn pushing forward trying to get back in the game but Bain and the Dogs defence held firm. The game was over as a contest when a cross from Hargreaves was touched on by Harvey and controlled and volleyed home by Turnes to make it 3-0. Turnes then completed his hat trick by heading home at the far post following a corner by Henderson to make it 4-0. It was soon 5-0, when Curry, who had been forced to go up front after being injured in the first 30mins, robbed the Hetton centre half and unselfishly laid it to Henderson to tap in. The scoring was over when a through ball by Henderson put Harvey clear and his shot/block tackle looped over the keeper to make it 6-0.

A great team performance considering we were struggling with numbers and had to change formation 3 times due to more injuries during the game

Man of the Match: Kevin Turnes

Houghton Chilton Lodge fc 3  v 1 Washington Ox & Plough fc
HCLFC progressed to the2nd round of the presidents trophy with a 3-1 home win against ox & plough fc. HCLFC took the lead around the 20 min mark when clever thinking by Andrew Bowes on a freekick slid the ball past the wall to young Iain MacPherson who finishes well into the far bottom corner. Andrew Bowes was again the provider near half-time with a great ball to the back post from the left where MOM Jonny Fox smashed the ball home on the volley. 2nd half Ox & Plough came out fighting looking to get back into the game and enjoyed plenty off possession as The Chilton Lodge took their foot off the pedal. The away side pulled a goal back around the hour mark when their man picked up the ball down their right and drifted across the outside of the box and curled the ball home in off the post. With about 15 to go Perri Agnew put Iain Macpherson through one on one with the keeper who saved well initially only for the ball to spoon up in the air where Iain Mac made no mistake nodding home from a tight angle to seal the win. The Chilton Lodge should have scored more however Iain Mac & David Firth both missed gilt edged chances from very close range, 3-1 FT.
Washington New Tavern 2  V 5 Chester Whitehills
Washington New Tavern started out the stronger team and scored from the break after 10 mins. The goal was eventually turned in by the Whitehills defender. Whitehills promptly reacted and pushed the game over the course of the 1st half. a volley from outside the box lobbing the Taverns keeper to make it 1-1 at half time. Whitehills pushed the 2nd half and their dominance paid off as they went 3-1 up on 55 minutes. Washington Tavern pulled 1 back to make it 3-2 and left a glimmer of hope to push for extra time, Whitehills however kept pressing the game and scored 2 goals in the last 10 minutes to end to the game 5-2. Chester Whitehills sail through to the next round.
Witton Gilbert WMC FC 3 vs  6 Pelaw Grange Dogs FC
In the early stages of the game with Pelaw Grange Dogs Fc playing slighlty downhill they dominated the play and it wasn't surprising they took the lead after 19 minutes but it took a great volley from chris Hawkins from around 25 meters out to open the scoring. Agian after some fine work down the wing by Neil Worley and David Henderson the ball was put into Witton's penalty box and was headed back to Chris Hawkins on the edge of the penalty box who hammered the ball low into the net. As Pelaw pressed forward they left the back door open and Witton pulled one back but just before half time Marc Wood re installed the 2 goal lead with a third goal for the Pelaw Grange Dogs FC. The half time team talk must have had some effect on the players with a bit of a goal rush from Pelaw with Chris Hawkins getting his hatrick on 50 minutes, David Henderson finally getting a goal in the match although it did seem to take a deflection on its way in and then captain David Donnelly also finally getting onto the score sheet rounding the keeper and then the defender who came back to make it 1-6 on only 53 minutes. Pelaw had substituted Marc Wood in this same period who had gone down injured with Josh Donnelly and Peter Donnelly then came on for David Donnelly shortley after he had scored. They then seemed a bit disorganised and switched off although were still pressing forward they left the defenders open for 2 breakaways for Witton to pull two goals back to make it a final score of 3 - 6 to Pelaw Grange Dogs FC. The game overall was played cleanly by both sides with very few disputes.
New Brancepeth 4 v  0 Kelloe Davy Lamp
a very dull game new brancepeth never really got going but took the lead through john kidd, and adam purvis added a neat 2nd,after half time new brancepeth still never got out the blocks and davy lamp where putting the harder work in and had it not been for new brancepeth keeper in fine form mite have been different result, new brancepeth then broke and kidd again scored with a rare header,he rounde it off with an easy finish for his hatrick
Bowburn 3 v 2 langley park rams head
With langley park manager mark not there the chairman ran the side and just wasn't to be and the runners up from last year went out.langley had plenty of chances to win game and missed some good chances, were 2-1 up with goals from tony rutter and craig bowman ,then chucked it away ,
just one of them days
Shadforth Plough 0v 1 High Shincliffe Avenue
Another tightly contested cup tie in the space of 4 weeks between the clubs. Both teams playing some good football and having chances. High Shincliffe took the lead on 44 minutes after Mattie Barber pounced on a mistake from the Shadforth keeper to slot home following a long drive from Avenue keeper Simon Coultas. The second half started as the first finished with both teams pressing for goals. The game started getting a bit scrappy and High Shincliffe went down to ten men after a moment of idiocy from Josh Carr who spoiled what had been a great game for him with a rash challenge. Shadforth pressed ten-man High Shincliffe for an equaliser who managed to hang-on. Shadforth also finished the game with ten man when their skipper got himself removed from the pitch for a double yellow card for dissent. Overall a good cup tie.
pittington  3 vs 2 pity me lambton hound
pittington played the better foootball, which enabled them to go 3 nil up, but a spirited fight back from pity me give pittington a scare getting2 goals back, before a wonder stop from pittingtons keeper saved it from going into extra time

Premier Division
Hetton lyons Cricket Club 9 - 0 Coxhoe wmc fc
Coxhoe visited Hetton Lyons cc with a weakened side. It was a goal feast at Murton with the Lyons dominating the game with some lovely football and clinical finishing but it was the Lyons Goalkeeper Shaun Newbrooke that was first in to the action when he pulled off a great diving save in the 11th minute which looked goal bound and minute later Lewis Teasdale opened the Lyons account with a great strike 1-0. Three minutes later a thru ball from Kane and Chris Lowther gave the keeper no chance 2-0. Newbrooke pulled off another good save from the Coxhoe forward in the 36th minute but the Lyons were creating plenty of chances and 5 minutes before half time Hodgson finish off a fine goal with good work from Kane and Lowther 3-0.Hetton started the second half like the first, a cross from Davidson to the near post and Chris Lowther flicked it between the keeper and the near post 4-0. Chris Lowther got his hat trick in the 52nd minute with a lovely ball from Kane and Lowther found the back of the net again 5-0. The Lyons went 6-0 up on the hour mark with a tremendous strike from the right back Pearson and two minutes later with the return of Chris Bell a brilliant left foot strike found the top corner of the net 7-0. Chris Bell made it 8-0 when he beat the offside trap and chipped the ball over the keeper. Hodgson wrapped the game up in the 83rd minute with an unstoppable strike and to give the Lyons a well earned result

Sedgefield NETPark 1-5 Washington Victoria
Washington Victoria gained revenge on Sedgefield NETPark who over the last few seasons have been a bit of a bogey team for them. Both teams had players missing, Sedgefield didn't get into any rhythm at all and gave a poor performance.
Washington played the better of the two and created more chances resulting in a pretty comfortable 5-1 victory.
Newton Aycliffe wmc 1 - 0 Brandon Sports
Brandon created all the early threats, and there was half an hour gone when Aycliffe created their first chance.A handfull of chances followed for Ayciffe most being spooned over the bar.Straight from the second half kick off Aycliffe took the lead when Adam Robinson chipped the ball over the visiting keeper. Brandon had to be more adventerous and the game opened out.Aycliffe created some good chances, but good saves by both keepers kept the score at 1-0..
Washington Jfc  4 v  2 Chester le street Chesters
A hot sunny morning hard for boh teams.Paul botcherby scored a penalty for chester after martin o'neill was brought down in the box.JFC took advantage of our defender going over on his ankle and levelled after the break , the injury to the defender reduced chesters to 10 men , however Michael Toon scored from 20 yards out before a JFC striker fell over in the box and it was judged a penalty to everyones suprise and JFC equalised from that , then 2 goals within 10 mins sealed chesters fate and it was JFC who continued through to the next round of the cup.
Burnside  0 v 3 Sacriston WMC
A cagey start saw both sides having periods of possession, the first real chance fell to the visitors and Sam Renwick raced away from the defence to poke the ball past the keeper. On 35 minutes Graham Embleton hit a trademark freekick towards the top corner, the defender managed to get his head on hit only to send it into the opposite corner. Half time 0-2
The second half saw Burnside start the better and create lots of 1/2 chances, only some good goalkeeping and defending kept them from pulling back into the game. Renwick and Mordue continued to cause the Burnside defence trouble with their pace and non stop running. The 3rd game with some clever interplay between Embleton, Mordue and Renwick whichsaw the ball end up with Renwick on the edge of the box. He skipped round the last man then sat the 'keeper down before rolling home to make it 3-0. To the Burside's credit they never stopped trying to get back in the game and could have scored at least 1. Renwick should have had his hatrick but poor finishing prevented this.

The home side started the brighter of the two sides with The Plough playing some great neat football. Against the run of play Coxhoe took the lead with a fine finish from just outside the area. The goal settled the away team down as they started to play some good football in the central area. The Plough had an excellent opportunity to equalise shortly before half time when Hill drilled the ball across the area which landed at the feet of Sherrif but his close range shot was superbly saved by the Coxhoe keeper.
The second half kicked off and both sides continued to play some good passing football. The home side got a deserved equaliser when Hill played in Aaron Sherrif who drilled a superb strike past the keeper from distance.  The Plough took the lead not long after when Ben Lloyd supplied a great through ball which Daniel Hill slotted past the Coxhoe keeper. The home side continued to press to try and kill the game off but found the Coxhoe keeper in sparkling form as he made a string of top class saves. The away side enjoyed a spell of pressure themselves and forced a couple of great saves from Graham Unsworth in The Plough goal. Coxhoe took advantage of the tired legs in the home defense as they took advantage of some sloppy defending scoring two goals by quick succession. Pelw Grange Dogs  travelled to Adventure Lane, to play West Rainton The Dogs lost the toss and Rainton decided to kick up hill first half which seen the Dogs have most of the play, even so chances where not coming easy Rainton worked extremely hard to close down and managed to counter attack well on the break. The Dogs main chances came from some great Henderson corners but no one could make contact to finish. The Dogs then broke away down the right when Gosnell and Wood combined well but the cross was easily dealt with. The Dogs also managed to be offside more in the first half of this game then the full of last season, not possible? Yeah it was! With very little getting created the Dogs finally got a bit luck and when then Rainton keeper spilled the ball and Mclean was on hand to put the ball into and empty net for his 1st competitive goal. Chris Harvey then had a chance to put us two ahead when Henderson crossed a ball from the left that just bounced in front of the keeper and Harvey and neither made contact. (Half Time) Second half started and the Dogs where all over the place, Rainton where using the hill and a wind that appeared to there advantage with long balls but the Dogs defence stood it’s ground and cleared there lines. It was way into the second half when Rainton where awarded a free kick that was crossed into the box from the wing and not dealt with for the Rainton number 9 to tap in from close range. Pelaw looked to go back in front when Harvey was played in and his effort was saved by the Rainton keeper. Sacriston WMC  entertained Washington Jays , Sacriston  started the stonger of the two sides but some sloppy defending could have seen them go 1-0 down, the defence failed to deal with a simple ball and allowed the Jays striker in on goal, only a good save from Potts down to his left stopped the goal. After this Sacriston got into gear and the 1st goal came when Ryan Nicholson broke from his own box with the ball, a 75 yard run and a 1-2 with Sam Renwick saw him bearing down on goal, he slipped the ball into the net from an acute angle to make it 1-0. Sacriston should have gone further in front and had several chances to but some great work from the Jays keeper kept the score at 0-1 at half time. The second half started much the same as the first had ended with Sacriston having lots of the ball and applying pressure, David Winter rose to head a long throw from Renwick into the net and make it 0-2, the 3rd came from some great play by Graham Embleton, he slipped the ball through to Renwick who passed the ball around the keeper to make it 3. The 4th was the best of the lot with several players involved, the ball was squared eventaully to Liam Burn on the edge of the area, he took one touch and curled a lovely finish into the bottom cornerFinal Score Washington Jays 0-4 Sacriston WMCLeague Newcomers Chester Relton Terrace lost 2-1 at  Ushaw Moor Cricket Club.           In the Big Sedgefield Derby the Social Club were 4-1 home winners over Netpark.Lumley Fc crashed to a 3-1 home defeat by Washington New TavernAfter 2 excellent pre-season wins in the friendlies and after a busy summer of players coming in and going out Sacriton Cricket Club travelled to Gilesgate Moor Queens Head for the first game of the season. The game started tentatively with both teams feeling each other out and then on 8 minutes the Cricketeres took the lead. A swift move resulted in a cross from the right hand side which was headed back across goal at the far post by O’Brien where Gregory got the final touch in front of the onrushing keeper on to Yates and he finished well with his left foot from 6 yards out.Sacriston then shot themselves in the foot 5 minutes later and allowed Gilesgate to get level. A long hopeful punt up field from the Gilesgate keeper caused panic in the Sacriston defence where Michael Frazer ducked and allowed the ball to bounce and the other 2 Sacriston defenders in O’Brien and Bladen were slow to react and the Gilesgate forward  did well to nip in unmarked and place his shot into the corner of the net past the on rushing Hall in the Sacriston goal!Gilesgate nearly went ahead soon after when hesitation again in the Sacriston defence allowed room for the Gilesgate player to take a shot from 12 yards but the shot was well saved by Hall down to his right. Sacriston finished the half much the stronger and nearly went ahead when Gary Draper drifted across the penalty box unmarked and he received a ball into feet following a good move down the left hand side but he could not readjust his body position in time to direct his shot goal wards.Yates was in the thick of the action for Sacriston and he twice missed good headed chances following good crosses from the right hand side from Quinn and Draper.Half time came and went and then on 47 minutes Sacriston went ahead when Gregory was fouled on the left hand side 25 yard from goal. Gary Draper took the resulting free kick and he floated the ball perfectly towards the back post where Gregory was there to stoop low and head home for a 2-1 lead.Sacriston continued to dominate the play and had nearly all the possession and apart from the odd moment of hesitation in defence where Quinn and Bladen swapped positions were in control. Then on 67 minutes the Cricketers  should have made the game safe. Marc Hall sent a booming long kick forward out of defence and the ball was flicked on by Yates on to Collinson who all of a sudden found himself baring down on goal and just as he was about to shoot the Gilesgate defender brought him down for a clear penalty. Gary Draper steeped up to take the penalty but the Gilesgate keeper guessed correctly and saved well diving to his rightSacriston still had opportunities but we just could not put them away. Gregory came off after a good debut on 65 minutes and was replaced by Thornton who had an excellent match, Ward came on for Yates and Couling came on for Solan. Gilesgate did have their 5 minutes of sustained pressure between 80 & 85 minutes when they had a succession of corners and good territory.
Considering the 2-1 scoreline we finished the final 3 minutes much the stronger side and had more chances to score. Ward was set free one on one with the keeper and he had his shot well saved. Then in the final minute we final managed to secure the game when after some clever link up play down the left hand side between Thornton, Couling & Collinson the ball came to Grant Boyd who after careful footwork inside the 6 yard box found the space to bury his left foot shot into the corner of the net. The final whistle was then immediately blown to make the final score 3-1.to the Cricketers.
Other Results in the Trophy, Newcomers Chester Whitehills were 4-3 home winners over Langley Park Rams Head,Hilda Park lost 5-0 at Chilton Wmc,Washington Vic won 6-2 at Durham Bede Lodge. Two games needed extra time, Pittington  beat Esh Cricket Club and  Washington JFC beat Ferryhill Dynamoes. The Bird Inn lost 4-2 at Framwellgate Moor Wmc and Chester Red Lion won 5-3 at Houghton Chilton Lodge.

In the Leagues  Premier Division The Only Game saw Champions Hetton Lyons Cricket Club entertain Kelloe Wmc. Nervous start from both teams but the Lyons opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, a cross from the right hand side from Teasdale and Nicky Kane was their to score. Hetton went 2-0 up in the 41st minute a short corner from Gordon to Craig Price and he skipped past one defender in to the 18 yard box and his shot gave the keeper no chance. Kelloe had a good chance to pull a goal back just before half time but the shot went wide of the goal.Second half and the Kelloe goalkeeper was making some great saves from Wallace Craggs and Teasdale and in the 67th minute great work on the left from Craggs squared the ball across the 18 yard box to Captain Marc Ellison and he made no mistake to make 3-0. Kelloe had a penalty appeal turned down but the Lyons were worthy winners

League Round up

Thursday 23rd August 2012

It became very clear from the start of this match that East Rainton was going to be well up for the fight and they didn’t disappoint. The game was not safe right up until the 88th minute when we finally scored our 3rd goal to kill the game off.The game was tight early on with both teams trying to get to grips with the pitch and the conditions. Sacriston created the first big chance of the game when Gary Draper’s left wing cross found Andrew Solan unmarked inside the box and he headed wide. Two minutes later East Rainton took the lead when a short corner routine was then followed by a ball into the box which reached the far post where there number 10 received the ball and he feigned to shoot and he then turned Michael Quinn who had committed to the challenge and he finished superbly placing the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.
Sacriston responded well and spent the rest of the first half pinning East Rainton into their own half creating several chances in the process. On 25 minutes Grant Boyd played the pass of the season so far when he played a 50 yard ball straight on to the path of Ward who ran with the ball into the box and his shot looked destined for the far corner but the ball rebounded of the inside of the post and was scrambled behind for a corner.
The pitch was very narrow and this did help us from set pieces and throw ins and our good general play was giving us some good opportunities to exploit this. On 34 minutes we got level when Gary Draper’s long throw resulted in confusion in the 6 yard box and O’Brien slide tackled the goalkeeper and won the ball and Collinson was waiting at the far post unmarked to slide the ball into an empty net. Sacriston then took the lead on 39 minutes when James Thornton’s deep free kick found Gary Draper in the box and he stabbed a right footed shot at the Rainton keeper and he parried the ball out to Collinson who again was in the right place at the right time to plant his header into the empty net.Half time came and went and on 50 minutes Ward who was by far the best player on the pitch on the night with his never say die attitude and constant running in behind the East Rainton defence got a good shooting opportunity inside the box but his shot was well saved again by the East Rainton goalkeeper. Then Andrew Solan got a good shooting opportunity from around 12 yards but put his chance well over the bar.Yates and Nixon replaced Thornton & Solan on the hour mark and that give the side some more pace in the midfield and forward areas. Fenton came on for Collinson for the final 20 minutes.East Rainton did show remarkable spirit and although they didn’t create much there defence kept us at bay as we pressed hard for the killer 3rd goal. Ward was thwarted again on 80 minutes by the East Rainton keeper after a great run into the box from the right hand side resulted in Ward shooting at the far post but the keeper did well getting down low to his right to tip the ball round the post for a corner.Michael Quinn who had a solid game at right wing back suddenly found himself 6 yards out with a free shot on goal after another good move but he blazed his shot over the bar. Then we finally made the game safe with 3 minutes to go when Ward made another powerful run cutting in from the left hand side carrying the ball 25 yards and he laid the ball on to Robert Nixon who kept his shot low from 20 yards out and the goalkeeper let the ball squirm underneath and into the net. This was harsh on him because he had kept them in the game until then. Stuart Fenton added a 4th on 88 minutes to give the game a fairer score line on the balance of play when Gary Draper’s right wing cross was parried by the keeper straight to Fenton at the far post who finished instinctively with a stabbed right footed shot. The game finished shortly afterwards for a final score of 4-1. Houghton Mill Allstars 1 Burnside WMC 4 scrappy first half but burnside took control after the break and could of been 10 1 but for missed chances goalscorers ellison 2 shears 2  An even contest from start to finish.  Brandon took a 2 goal lead through Scott Bryden and Paul Eilles before Houghton pulled a goal back before half time.  Brandon's defence stood strong throughout the 2nd half and killed the game off with 10 minutes remaining, David Fort with a well taken goal from the edge of the box.Sedgefield St Edmunds 3 - 2 Kelloe WMCSt Edmunds went one down after three minutes but goals from John Maddison and Andrew Blackburn put St Edmunds ahead. One flashpoint in the game saw Hetton go down to 10 men after their centre half was seen to deliberately elbow a JFC player off the ball. However if anything this just made Hetton up their game and saw JFC relax a little! With approx 20 minutes to go the deadlock was broken after a good move down the right the ball fired across the box for striker Byrne to tap in at the back post!
JFC then tried to gain the equaliser and pushed more men forward only to be court on the break and go 2-0 down after another good finih by Byrne! Byrne would have had a hattrick on the night if it wasn't for Smith in the JFC goal who made a great save from a Byrne penalty. With only minutes left on the watch Hetton grabbed a third and brought the game to an end.FT 3-0 Sherburn Village 2 - 1 Houghton Chilton Lodge FC Houghton Chilton Lodge FC made the trip to Sherburn Village Lambton Arms FC in this Thursday night Division 2 fixture. In the First  Divison only one game was played due to teams taking part in the JD Taxis Trophy, Sacriston Cricket Club travelled to Chilton WmcThis game it has to be said was played on a horrendous pitch with the grass so long that playing good football on it was nearly impossible; The Cricketers started the game well and took the lead on 4 minutes when Gary Draper after winning the free kick himself chipped the ball into the box where Michael Frazer won the header and cushioned it into the path of Yates who found himself in space and finished clinically.Chilton levelled the game on 14 minutes when louis Fitzgerald was given to much time to shoot outside the box and he placed his shot into the bottom right corner. Sacriston reacted strongly and on 16 minutes re took the lead. It started with Andrew Solan playing a lovely pass out to the right hand side where Quinn laid the ball off to Collinson who delivered a cracking cross into the box which found Ward who had made a good run across the box and he placed his glancing header expertly into the bottom left hand cornerThen on 19 minutes Sacriston went 3-1 ahead when after some good team pressing high up the field resulted in Yates pinching the ball from a poor Chilton pass and he ran powerfully through the heart of the Chilton defence and powered a left foot shot into the bottom left hand corner of the goal giving the Chilton keeper no chance.Hall in the Sacriston goal had a couple of saves to make but apart from the odd set piece Chilton didn’t cause to many problems for the Sacriston defence who were all awesome on the day in the shape of O’Brien, Frazer & Bladen. This was the cornerstone of the teams win today along with a good work ethic everywhere on the pitch. The Cricketers winning 3-1
In the second Division the Chilton Lodge entertained Washington Lambton Village FC in their first home league game of the season. The away team were lucky not to go into HT with 10 men after the referee used common sense not to send the lad off who conceded the 2 penalties after consulting with home captain Adam Summerson.

Garry McCartney made it 4-2 from the spot after a penalty was conceded by Martin Armstrong. COXHOE WMC FC 3 v 0 KELLOE WMC FC
Coxhoe were to emerge as worthy winners from their first league meeting withlocal rivals Kelloe for a number of years. From the first whistle Coxhoe's work rate and desire to play football saw them take an early lead through the outstanding Daniel Purvis who had broken from cental defence. The game turned quite scrappy for a spell following the opening goal as Kelloe attempted to stifle Coxhoe's attacking football however the irrepressible Adam Strong was on hand to give Coxhoe a two goal cushion going into the second half with a fantastic finish from distance. Kelloe made some changes for the second half but it was Coxhoe who again found themselves with the majority of chances in front of goal. Adam Strong converted a penalty midway through the half to notch his second goal of the game and give Coxhoe a 3-0 lead after the referee had rightly blown for a pull inside the area. Chances to put the game out of sight continued for Coxhoe but were not converted, however it did not prove to be costly. Brandon Sports 2 v 3 Sacriston Cricket Club.

The Cricket Club  started  the game brilliantly and with great intensity with the midfield and forwards pressing high up the pitch forcing the Brandon Sports  back line into errors. They  opened the scoring on 9 minutes when Andrew Solan’s corner found Michael Frazer unmarked at the back post and he volleyed in right footed. The Cricketers  went 2-0 up on 16 minutes Yates powerful run into the box resulted in his shot being parried out to the far post by the Brandon keeper where Grant Boyd was waiting to slide in a right footed tap in from 4 yards out.

Then on 43 minutes Marc Hall’s long clearance bounced over the head of the Brandon Sports centre half where the brilliant Ward got on to the ball and he lobbed the on rushing keeper with a clever right footed volley which went straight into the net. 3-0 to the Cricketers.

Then on the stroke of half time Brandon got a lifeline when an over hit corner was retrieved at the back post and put back into our box where the Brandon forward clearly brought the ball down with his hand before finishing well into the bottom left corner from 5 yards out.

However 3-1 was a good lead to take into halftime and Collinson replaced the injured Thornton. The Cricketers  started well again in the start of the 2nd half, when on 55 minutes Yates brilliantly worked an opportunity for himself carrying the ball into the box before firing his shot wide. Then 5 minutes later Ward got in behind the Brandon defence and on the stretch tried to cross the ball for Yates who was all alone at the back post but he just couldn’t find his man and put the cross out of play. This match had a very high intensity and by now Brandon had made several changes to formation and personnel in an attempt to get back in the game. Draper replaced the tiring Yates for the final 20 minutes and he contributed greatly in the midfield areas and tracking runners. Couling replaced Welch in the final 10 minutes who had an excellent match in defence and contributed well going forward but shot over twice when in good positions.

Having not taken these chances allowed Brandon half a chance and by this time to be honest Brandon where making all the play and we the Cricketers  were defending doggedly with O’Brien and Frazer superbly commanding at the heart of our defence.

Then on 81 minutes Lee Blades finally got a chance to run at Marc Bladen in our box and after a clever step over Bladen tripped him in the box and a penalty was correctly given.Gav Mudd stepped up and converted the penalty expertly into the bottom left corner. Final score 3-2 to the Cricketers.
