The Final Day of the Season

Goals from Michael Fort and Two from Dave Lawson Gave Brandon Bay Horse a 3-2 home win over Sacriston Cricket Club; this relegated the Cricket Club as they needed three points. Chester Hilda Park were also Relegated as they crashed to a 6-2 defeat at Kelloe Wmc. Hetton Lyons Cricket Club Thanks to goals from Warren Byrne (4) Liam Beeston and Jason Ainsley

In the First Division Champions Houghton Comrades drew 1-1 at the Biddick Inn, The Chester Osborne were 5-3 winners at Gilesgate Moor Hotel, Langley Park Steelers crashed to a 4-2 defeat at relegated Ushaw Moor Cricket Club. Washington Arms reordered their biggest win of the Season winning 9-3 at Sedgefield Black Lion.

In the Second Division

Champions Coxhoe Wmc shared the Points with visitors Chilton Wmc; Sherburn Lambton Arms won 4-1 at Durham Bede Lodge. Washington Victoria were 10-0 Home winners over Fellow Washington Side Lambton Village Inn.

In the   Third Division East Rainton Fc Travelled to Ferryhill Saints. It was Rainton who won the epic battle with Ferryhill Saints.  In this division 3 clash it was second place for the winner and the right to play in division 2.Ferryhill dominated the first half and went into the break comfortable 3-0 winners.  The second half started the same and Ferryhill increased their lead to 4.  With 20 minutes left on the clock, East Rainton FC started their amazing fight back.  Goals from Gaunt, Shepherd, Beckwith and Hopps pulled the score back to 4-4 and with seconds remaining on the clock, Ferryhill won a corner.  Everyone pushed up into the Rainton box, including the Ferryhill goalkeeper.  East Rainton won back possession through Robert Walker; He pumped a long ball up field towards East Rainton’s Jonathan Gaunt, who managed to beat the last defender and slot into the empty net.  East Rainton win 5-4.The Bird Inn won 4-0 at Framwellgate Moor Wmc. In the final game of the season after having played a 2-2 all draw on Thursday with High Handen Hold Fc with a make shift back four and having to change the keeper at the start of the second half due to cracked ribs it was a more normal team for Pelaw Grange Dogs FC. However as keeper Wayne Laws was called into work at the last moment midfielder Chris Gosnell was left with the short straw to take over in goal for Pelaw Grange Dogs after having taken over on the Thursday night as well. Pelaw took the lead first as Andrew Tippins chased a long ball and headed it past the keeper just 5 minutes before half time. Pelaw however then let Pittington score with a mistake at the back to make it 1-1 at half time. Before this though Centre Back Scott Patterson had been laid flat out after colliding with Pittingtons Michael Turner who had come up for a corner for about 4 minutes. At the start of the second half Paul Hargreaves headed Pelaw Grange Dogs in front again as Pittingtons defence was static from a free kick. Paul then scored another goal making it 3-1 to Pelaw and when Andrew Tippins made it 4-1 Pittington were really struggling. Pelaw made a substitution with Gary Ryan coming on for Peter Snowball who had worked hard throughout the game. Andrew Tippins then made it 5-1 after rounding the keeper and with 13 minutes to go Neil Worley came off to give Anthony Nicholson a run and with 5 minutes to go he scored after a shot from Paul Curry was parried by the keeper and he rifled it into the net to make it 6-1. Pelaw nearly made it 7 in the final few seconds but the ball went high over the bar from Andrew Tippins flick. Pittington had also made substitutions without any success and had changed their formation at half time to try and break the deadlock but this worked against them. Craig Bain and David Fleming along with Andrew Smiles had good games in defence for Pelaw Grange dogs and David Donnelly had worked in the midfield. Shadforth Plough Inn were 5-4 winners over visitors Bowburn Cooperage.Witton Gilbert Wmc lost 10-3 at Home to Champions New Durham Wmc.

In the Fourth Division New Brancepeth Wmc lost 3-1 at Dubmire Wmc, Ferryhill Post Boy beat ferryhill Dynamo’s 9-5 and Washington Colliery won 2-1 at Langley Park Rams Head.

Kelloe Wmc Collect Medals

 League Cup Sponsored by Spennymoor Town Kelloe v Pelton RAOB, Kelloe Wmc and Pelton RAOB entertained the large and at times somewhat partisan crowd with football of the highest quality in the final of the League Cup sponsored by Spennymoor Town FC played at Durham’s New Ferons Park. After the game both teams were commended by the league management committee for a putting on great performance after such a heavy schedule of games leading up to the final. Kelloe began the game strongly and kept the high pace going for much of the first half, Pelton well organised in defence and with tenacious challenges in midfield soaked up the pressure. Kelloe’s Ian Ward was a real handful in and around the box and had a great goal bound effort finger tipped over the bar by keeper and man of the match Scott Cresswell four minutes before half time. Earlier Pelton had seen a Josh Watson effort saved by an equally impressive Kelloe keeper Carl Morris. The second continues with Kelloe pushing hard, Pelton’s resistance has to be admired however the deadlock is broken on the fifty five minute mark. Kelloe’s Alex Wilson delivers a great ball into the box for Ian Ward to head home. From the restart Pelton almost equalise with a Craig Mickle effort that’s narrowly wide and two minutes later a long range Craig Marron effort is palmed by keeper Morris onto the post and out for a corner. Pelton continue pushing hard and Karl Ritchie is denied an equaliser by a wonderful Carl Morris save after sixty five minutes. Kelloe whether the storm and begin to reassert themselves but a series of great saves from keeper Cresswell keep Pelton in the game. Keiran Megran had a great chance to put the result beyond doubt after eighty five minutes after being set up by the impressive Stuart Thompson but he blasted his shot over the bar with the goal at his mercy. A minute late Stuart Thompson seals Kelloe’s victory with a powerful shot from the edge of the box. A wonderful game with good performances all over the field and a great advertisement for the Durham and District Sunday Football League

Thursday 5th May

In the Premier Division Langley Park Wmc gained three valuable points in a 1-0 away win at Brandon Bay Horse.

Houghton Comrades won 3-2 at Chester Osborne in the First Division

In the Second Division Chester Plough Inn were back in home action after a short break and were up against Washington Lambton Village in the last of their midweek fixtures. The home side were missing Atchison, Lloyd, Johnson, McGuiness and Cuthbertson due to holidays, injury and suspension but still had a strong squad to choose from. The Plough got the game underway and immediately had Lambton Village on their back foot. In the opening minute Aaron Sheriff broke down the left flank and into the box before firing a shot on target but the away keeper made a fine save to palm away for a corner. The home side didnt have long to wait to break the deadlock. Sheriff was involved again as he played the ball up to Joel Baddams, who neatly played in Daniel Hill and the striker kept his composure to place the ball low into the corner of the net. After enjoying the early spell of pressure the home side sat a little deep and allowed Washington back in the game. For the next twenty five minutes Lambton Village enjoyed the majority of posession playing some neat football across the middle of the park, however they didnt take advantage of the posession as they didnt create any chances on goal. The away side did force a number of corners and had a couple of half chances to equalise but couldnt work the home keeper. Against the run of play, the home side doubled their lead with a fine move. A number of players were involved in the build up before it was played out wide to Aaron Sherrif who beat his man before crossing for Daniel Hill to head home past the advancing keeper. H/T 2-0 Washington Lambton Village got the second period underway and continued to play some tidy football in the central areas. They worked their first opening of the game when the away forward won posession from Nathan Baddams and broke into the area but his shot was saved well from Stuart Lambert. The game should have been wrapped up in the 60th minute when Joel Baddams played in Hill who beat the defender and keeper but his shot came back off the post with the whole goal gaping! Elliot Rose was brought on for the tiring Chris Howey and almost immediately made an impact. Rose was involved in some great touch football before passing to Seymour who played in Joel Baddams but the home striker was harshly judged to be offside. Lambton Village were handed a lifeline in the 60th minute when they pulled a goal back. Their only threat all night was from long Rory Delap style throw ins. The ball was thrown in with pace and power which was flicked on for the home defender to nod home from close range. The goal gave the away side a massive lift and they almost grabbed an equaliser minutes later when the away striker hit a sweet volley that looked destined for the top corner only to see Lambert get a strong hand to tip the ball onto the crossbar and Marc Howey cleared to safety. The resulting corner came in and Lambert once again made a fine save to hold on to the ball from close range. Whilst the Washington side went in search of an equaliser it left huge gaps in their defence for The Plough to expose. Jamie Seymour hit a superb volley from 25 yards out but the away keeper was also equal to it as he tipped it on to the crossbar and away for a corner. The game was put beyond doubt in the 82nd minute when Joel Baddams was sent racing clear on goal and he made no mistake by finishing past the Washington keeper. David Wilcock and Stephen Simm entered the field of play at the expense of Sherrif and Baddams and both could have had goals to their name. Wilcock had two chances in quick succession which forced a save from the keeper but minutes later was sent clear on goal but he could only shoot wide of the mark past the advancing keeper. Daniel Hill worked an opportunity in the last minute of the game and as he was on a hat trick chose to shoot at goal much to the annoyance of Simm waiting for a tap in! F/T 3-1

In the Third Division the Bird Inn Travelled to Pelaw Grange Dogs, a hard fought 2-2 draw gave them a share of the Points. New Durham Wmc were 7-0 winners over visitors Shadforth Plough Inn.

Wedensday 4th May

Kelloe WMC 0 v Staindrop FC 0 AET -Staindrop won 4-3 on pens played at West Auckland fc
Kelloe virtually dominated the game with 80% possession and their midfield controlling the game but resolute defending by the Staindrop back four prevented many clear cut chances with Close and Beckett outstanding .The Staindrop keeper made two excellent saves in the shoot out to win the game and put a new name on the trophy -congrats to Staindrop FC ,

Tuesday 3rd May

In the Premier Division Pelton Roab travelled to Chester Hilda Park, Pelton Looking for the Points to Finish Premier League runners up and Hilda Park Looking for Points to avoid Relegation. Pelton wrapped up a superb league campaign with a win 2-1. The First Pelton Goal Good work from Tony Healer led to an own goal from six yards out. Then On 89 Mins A great right footed finish from six yards out by Tony Healer, following a goalmouth scramble. Craig Mickle claimed an assist. Kelloe Wmc Lost 5-1 at Brandon Bay Horse, Paul Eiles, Tony Blades 2, Paul Bryden and John Lawson the Bay Horse scorers.

In the First Division Washington Arms Lost 3-2 at Gilesgate Moor Hotel.

The Fourth Division saw Ferryhill Post Boy and Kelloe Davy Lamp share the Points in a 2-2 draw; Washington Colliery lost 5-1 at Burnmoor Jkr.

Sunday 1 st May

Hetton Lyons Cricket Club are Premier League Champions after Warren Byrnes Four Goal super show, including an 11 Minute Hat trick, crushed Kelloe Wmc 8-0 away in their penultimate League Game. Ian Davison added a Brace and Keith Graydon and Chris Hughes also on target. Newton Aycliffe wmc were 3-0 winners at Brandon Bay Horse with Craig Mason and two from Mark Brischuck scoring. Langley Park Wmc won the Battle of the Bottom two 5-2 against Chester Hilda Park Fc,a Craig Coates Hatrick supported by goals from Darren Richards and Greg Coates, Dave Melvin scoring Both Hilda Park Goals.  

            In the First Division  Champions Houghton Comrades cruised to a 6-0 away win at Sedgefield Black Lion, Barry Turton Hitting a Hat Trick, George McCain, Ross Galley and Lee Andrews adding further goals.Sacriston Wmc had Peter Lawler and Aaron White to thank for their 2-1 win over  Barley Mow Inn, The Biddick Inn won 2-1 at Burnside Wmc thanks to goals from Stuart Anderson and Mark Philiskirk.Relgated Ushaw Moor Cricket Club shared the Points in a 3-3 draw with Visitors Chester Osborne Wmc.James Richardson Hitting Two and Michael Chapman for the Cricketers  for the Osborne  Chris Winn 2 and Natham Burrell.

            In the Second Division Washington Victoria eased Home 6-1 at Washington Lambton Village, Marl Liddle Hitting 4 plus one each for Ryan Mason and Steven Wilson. Chilton Wmc defeated Sherburn Lambton Arms 2-0 thanks to Goals from Curt Pickford and Dale Taylor. West Rainton were relegated after going down 3-1 at Sedgefield Net Park in a typical end of Season Game, Dan Pilling 2 and Phil Bland on Target for Net Park. Champs Coxhoe Wmc were convincing winners 5-1 winners at Waterhouses Fc with Michael Owens 2, Colin Young, Paul Broom, and Dan Purvis scoring.

            In the Third Division Framwellgate Moor Wmc succumbed 4-1 to Visitors Ferryhill Saints, Phil Steele getting the Fram goal, Tony Morgan 2, Andrew Agar and Dave Tate for the Saints. East Rain ton Fc won 3-1 at Pelaw Grange Dogs, for whom Neil Worley Scored, The Bird Inn  pipped Witton Gilbert Wmc 2-1 Neil Tiffen and  Terry Mackell  did the Damage. With Scott Embleton replying.

            In the Fourth Division Chester Cricket Club wrapped up their Campaign with a 4-1 Win at Ferryhill Dynamo’s, Dynamo’s Took the Lead early on thanks to  Vincent Gash but Michael Redshaw levelled before Ashley Balfours second Half Brace and a Dan Irving Strike  settled the Issue.Framwellgate Moor Salutation lost 4-0 at Langley Park Rams Head  who Had Paddy Harrington, Steve Cummings , Steve Mickle and Michael Watson on Targett.Quarrington Hill wmc Finished on a high winning 3-1 at Washington Honest Boy their Third successive win giving manager Rob Nicholson Hope for Next Season.Dubmire edged a 4-3 win over Washington Colliery who had Andrew McIntyre, Mark Stoves, and star man  John Kelley on the scoresheet.Two Goal Dave Finch sparked Dubmire  with Paul Fenwick and Neil Burnett also scoring. Bottom Club Burnmoor Juniors  pipped Kelloe Davy Lamp 5-4  to secure only their second win of the season with 4 Goal Carl Tingley the hero, Lee Gaunt adding the Other.

Thursday 28th April

Hetton Lyons Cricket Club entertained Langley Park Wmc a very competitive game as both teams fighting for the points for different reasons, Langley Park trying to avoid relegation and the Lyons to win the league. Hetton started well and scored after 10 minutes, Graydon played the ball thru to Nicky Kane who beat the defender and he squared the ball to Liam Beeston who slotted the ball home 0-1. The Lyons kept the pressure on the Langley Park defence and went 2 up after 33 minutes when Graydon once again the architect in the centre of midfield shoved a ball thru to Beeston  and his pass to the never ageing Jamie Clarke who duly scored 0-2, Jamie was unlucky 5 Minutes later when his shot hit the post. Langley Park had their first real effort on 42 minutes but was well saved from Keith Finch. Second half and the home side kept pushing forward for a goal but the Lyons defence gave them very few opportunities Clarke thought he scored in the dying minutes but the referee said it wasn't behind the goal line. Three good points for the Lyons and towards retaining the premiership

In the First Division Chester Osborne were beaten 4-1 at Burnside Wmc, Gilesgate Moor Hotel won 2-1 at the Biddick Inn.

            In the Second Division the only Game saw Washington Victoria win 9-3 at Durham Bede Lodge.

            In the Fourth Division Framwellgate Moor Salutation entertained Ferryhill Post Boy In a thrilling encounter it was the post boy who struck first after just 3 minutes, when a speculative long range effort found the bottom corner. The Salutation levelled mid way through the first half with a great finish from Gareth Bowden. Post Boy hit back with 2 goals before the break, with there 3rd coming from an excellent finish to lob the keeper first time. The game looked over but the salutation refused to lie down and brought it back to 3-2 with a Mark Hughes run and cool one on one finish with the keeper. The salutation equalizer came with 15 min left, a good run down the right the ball was pulled back to the edge of the 6 yard box and it was Salutations man of the match Dave Grindley who popped up to slot home. A good performance and result from the salutation against a team who clinched the league title on the day with a point. Langley Park Rams Head won 3-1 at Kelloe Davy Lamp.

Wednesday 27th April

Kelloe Wmc entertained Washington JFK in a re arranged Premier League Game, Goals from Stuart Thompson, A well delivered cross from Lee Peachey was converted by Stuart Thompson. Wednesday 27th April

Kelloe Wmc entertained Washington JFK in a re arranged Premier League Game, Goals from Stuart Thompson, A well delivered cross from Lee Peachey was converted by Stuart Thompson. Tuesday 26th April

In the Premier Division Top of the table clash saw the Hetton Lyons Cricket Club entertain second Placed  Pelton Roab.Warren Byrne nearly put the Lyons in front after 4 minutes but a brilliant save from the Pelton goalkeeper denied him and after 24 minutes Byrne was in the thick of it again and was brought down in the penalty area, Hodgson took the spot kick and the Goalkeeper saved it. Hetton broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute when Hodgson put the ball thru for Byrne to run on to and score 1-0. The Lyon kept the pressure on and some good football and a great ball from Walklate to Hughes on the right and squared the ball to Byrne to score and make it 2-0. Hetton were well on top  and with some better finishing could have scored a few more.Second half and Pelton pushed more men forward in search of a goal and were gifted one in the 68th minute with a bit of slack defending from Hetton and Pelton punished them with a goal 2-1. The visitors were playing the better football but not really troubling the Lyons goalkeeper, and the Lyons on the counter attack came close to scoring but Bell was denied with another good save from the visiting keeper. Warren Byrne almost grabbed his hat trick but his shot beat the goalkeeper and agonisingly  for Byrne the ball hit the post Full time 2-0 and the Lyons back on top of the Premier league 

In the First Division Sedgefield Black Lion and Chester Osborne shared the Points in a 3-3 Draw at Sedgefield.

In the Second Division  Lumley Fc Lost 2-0 at League Leaders Coxhoe Wmc , Durham Bede Lodge were 5-2 Winners at Washington Lambton Village Inn.

            In the Third Division Pittington Fc were 4-3 winners at Framwellgate Moor Wmc and League leaders New Durham Wmc won 4-0 against visitors Ferryhill Saints.

In the Fourth Division Quarrington Hill Wmc entertained Ferryhill Dynamoesl.  Ferryhill were by far the better team in the first half playing some excellent football but Q Hill defended well and limited the clear opportunities on goal.   Half time 0-0.  Second half Q Hill exploded into life with Q Hill scoring 3 goals in 6 minutes.  Dan Beaney scoring a brace on 47 and 50 minutes, and Chris Winter with a free kick that deceived the Ferryhill keeper.Ferryhill got back into the game, scoring with a free kick of their own on 65 minutes.  Then with 15 minutes to go Ferryhill got a second but Q Hill held on to take three points with some dogged defending and could have increased the lead on a couple of occasions. Q Hill MOM Dan Beaney. Chester Leonards Travelled to Kelloe Davy Lamp Taking nothing away from kelloe, but this really was a shock defeat for Leonards whose poor form continued, The home fans taunted Leonards Keeeper Chris Hornsby by calling him “Calamity Chris” after he let in a 40 yard free kick, Leonards did dominate the game from start to finish, but kelloe won the game with a penalty after Paul Chilton supplied the cross, and Josh Fryer found the net from six yards out with a clinical right footed effort had levelled things. In the Washington Derby the Colliery lost 6-0 at the Honest Boy.

  Peter Playle reports on the Alan Smith Memorial Trophy Final

The Castle Insurance Alan Smith Memorial Trophy final brought together two of the league’s Premier clubs, Brandon Bay Horse and Pelton RAOB in a closely contested encounter at New Ferons Park. Both teams started the game cautiously, Brandon create the first opening on the eight minute mark and grow in strength as the game progresses but it s Pelton who go closest to opening the scoring, a long range Paul Freeman effort testing had keeper Myers. Brandon’s Dan Hawkins sees a good effort cleared of the line on the thirty minute mark and five minutes later opens the scoring finishing off a great Chris Lawson move with a well struck volley. As half time approaches Pelton rock the Bay Horse with an equaliser, Craig Marron delivers a quality ball into the box for Craig Mickle to head home. In an evenly matched second half Pelton however created the most chances, Craig Marron squandered a great opportunity on the seventy fifth minute mark. As the final whistle and extra time looms the result is sealed in the final minute with a fine individual goal from Brandon’s David Fort.
