Comrades fall to Lyons

In the Leagues Premier Division Hetton Lyons Cricket Club maintained top spot with a hard fought 3-0 home win over Houghton Comrades. Joe Walton  opened the scoring for the Lyons after 12 minutes, a blistering run down the left hand side form Ian Watson and from his cross the Lyons strikers header gave Niki Lawson the comrades goalkeeper no chance. The Lyons went 2-0 up late in the second half this time Ian Watson was the scorer after good work from Nicky Kane and in the 87th minute Joe Walton got his second goal to make it 3-0 in the last minute Davy Gordon saw his shot hit the post after chipping the goalkeeper. Washington JFC entertained the re grouped Kelloe Wmc  for this league fixture and they turned up with exactly 11 players.JFC were well out-played in the first half with Kelloe playing some really good keep-football which paid dividends in the 23 minute when their no. Andy Soppitt hit a left foot shot which JFC`s keeper could only parried into the encroaching Kelloe forward Gary Turton who tapped in from 3yds 1-0 Kelloe. Kelloe went 2-0 ahead when a good passing move put Andy Soppitt through who fired into the top of the net from 12yds. JFC got back into the game when a poor back pass by the Kelloe full back saw Andy Middlemiss beat the keeper to the ball and a low strike went into bottom right corner 2-1 Kelloe, went further ahead when Gary Turton scored from an acute angle beating the JFC Keeper 3-1 Halftime.
The 2nd half saw JFC play much better and they came back into the game when they were awarded a penalty for hand ball Vincent took the spot kick and although slipping still managed to send the Kelloe keeper the wrong way 3-2 Kelloe. For the rest of the 2nd half JFC put Kelloe under the cosh and hit the bar and squandered a close range chance to share the points a draw would have been a fair result but well done to Kelloe they were back to their old selves. Chester le Street Chester’s drew 3-3 at Langley Park Wmc

In the First Division Sacriston WMC won 4-0 against Chester Hilda Park with Ben Sanderson running the show in midfield scoring two and David Winter also scoring two with him winning man of the match for a all round performance up front.

In the second Division Ushaw Moor Cricket Club were 3-0 home winners over East Rainton Fc.

Two Games in Division Three had Chester le Street sides the Red Lion away to st Cuthbert’s, with the Lion winning 3-0, It was local derby time for Pelaw Grange Dogs and another away trip to the Bird Inn at High Handenhold,, this was the 3rd away match n a row and with another 2 to come in the next 2 weeks making that 5 away games back to back. The first chances of the day fell to the Bird Inn who had a couple of shots from distance the first not trouble the Pelaw Keeper John Forster the second he saved well. The dogs where to slow in passing the ball and with the bird working hard to close them down it wasn’t looking good for Pelaw. They soon found there feet and managed to created a good chance when Chris Hawkins played in David Donnelly who’s shot was saved at the front post and the rebound was cleared. Against the run of play the bird took the lead when Pelaw lost the ball from a throw in and there centre forward Mike Fletcher broke away with the ball, he then passed a ball back to the Birds centre midfield Steve Hocking who shot from distance into the bottom corner. Hawkins then crafted a chance for him self when he managed to wriggle his way between two Bird defenders but his shot hit the side netting. The Dogs hit the side netting again with a shot from distance. Then the Bird goal keeper Steve Rainne pulled off great save, after Craig Gosnell managed to get a volley off into the ground that looked like hitting the top corner but somehow the keeper managed to get his hand on it and also injured himself after colliding with the post. The Dogs then seen a lot of the ball but it was the final pass that was letting them down. Pelaw got the second half under way and where on top and pulled level when a quick throw in to wood who then cross for Mark Lyall to finish from close range. It’s always said that the first 5-10 minutes after scoring are the most important and Pelaw just stopped and when a corner found an unchallenged a Bird Inn player they where punished as he headed into the top corner. Hawkins then had another chance which again didn’t test the Bird keeper and hit the side netting. The sucker punch for the Dogs came when a 50:50 ball seen Patterson left in a heap and clearly hurt (suspected broken ankle) and with the Bird nor the ref stopping they went onto to score there 3rd of the game very sporting by both team and ref. Pelaw made there only possible change after turning up to the game with only 12 men, Davidson replace the injured Patterson. Pelaw didn’t give up and pulled one back when a free kick was played into the back post and Gosnell headed back across for Worley to tap in from close range. Another talking point happened right at the end with a goal month scramble that seen 4-5 attempts at goal all blocked off the line and a final shot fired in by Worley was then saved on the line by the bird centre half with arm/hand, but some however the ref deemed this not to be an advantage to them as the defender turned. Well this has to go down as save of the day because it won the bird all 3 points.

Net Park kept trying but it was Burnside who increased their lead with a free header from a corner 0-4. Lee Peat scrambled one in at the death for Net park, Full Time 1-4.The tow Sacriston Teams the Cricket Club and the Wmc met in the first derby of the season, the first big chance game after half an hour when three Cricket Club players were allowed space only for Yates 8 yards from goal to fire at Potts one on one. The big moment in the first half came on the 35th minute mark when Summers was adjudged to have fouled a player and from 25 yards out Thornton sent an unstoppable shot into the right hand corner with Potts only managing to push it further into the net, this was proof of what the WMC would of liked to see from Thornton last season but only should glimpses.
The second half the WMC came back into the game and controlled the game better with them having more of the ball and looked more threatening than they did in the first. The cricket club did have chances to kill the game with a hatful of chances falling to Yates, four of which Potts made good saves to and another three he squandered wide or over the bar. With twenty minutes remaining Gavin Richardson fired an unstoppable shot from 35 yards out which cannoned of the post and left Hall only to watch the ball go wide. Then the turning point in the game was with 15 minutes left and David Winter was fouled in the area and the referee could only award a penalty, Wardle stepped up and calmly put the penalty away. The WMC nearly won the game with five minutes left when Hall turned the ball away for a corner from a Gavin Richardson header from eight yards out.
